South Australia, border crossing
Day Three. 09-03-12
I slept in.
It’s 9:30 when I get up, well on SA time it’s only 9AM. I must hide the veggies and fruit in the “secret compartment” or the damn cops will have me throw them away. Ten years ago with Manu we had to get rid of five kilos of fresh products. Well not this time mister Copper, I’ll be smarter.
Well, it turns out the quarantine bin isn’t manned anymore so no hassle there. So I pass the SA-VIC border, and make my way to Beachport for a bit of beach 4wding. Sadly the woman at the Tourist Info tells me the 40knots winds have closed the tracks with floury powder sand and there is no way I can get to Robe that way. She still points me to the start of the track, and very eagerly I … get bogged on the second sand dune. Nice one. Yes Jeff, I should have let the tyre pressure down. Once they’re down to 25psi and with the diff-lock, in low gear, I get out of the pit and get back on the main road in no time. I did stop on the way to a farmer’s market, to get some fresh products. The strawberries were just superb, best two bux I ever spent !
Robe by the mainroad is fairly dull and so I stop for lunch on the beach, then an even more boring drive leads me to Tailem Bend.
I spend an hour trying to find a nice campsite, went twice on the ferry, and end up on a rest area on the side of the Princess Highway. Damn.
Distance today : 483km, total 1203km.
