Indian Ocean Drive, part 1.
29 March 2012 – I just realised I forgot to hand over the spare set of keys to Pete and Andrea’s place. Oops. Well I guess there’s another excuse for Pete and I to have a beer in Karratha then.
The Indian Ocean Drive goes from Perth to Geraldton, along the coast. From Lancelin there is, well supposedly, a track to Cervantes, but I probably should have gotten a better map as the track I’m on goes through a military zone, and they’re shooting live ammo, so says the sign… Best not I thought. I go around the military zone, get bogged while trying to conquer a massive dune, rip off half the vegetation with the winch, then realise there is a “newer” track around the dune… Nice one.
I have a huge migraine, either from heat or exhaustion getting the car out of trouble so I quickly visit the Pinnacles, it’s a shame I don’t stick around for sunset bur frankly I’m done for the day. I camp at an old emu farm, owned by a British pilot, and I listen to his stories about flying around the world all night. Fascinating. We exchange our experiences; his way of travel obviously requires more funding…
Distance today: 347km. Total: 5895km.
