After the cars were loaded in the container in Medan, we spent our last night in the lovely company of Tonny and his family. I only packed for five days, hopefully by the start of next week, I’ll be on the road…
So the flight from Medan to Kuala Lumpur took just under an hour, and we landed before lunch in a hot and steamy KL. Welcome to Malaysia. What a contrast between Indonesia and here, the roads are clean, smooth, almost too perfect. People are different too. There’s four “ethnicities” in the country : Indian, Malay, Chinese and the rest of the world. Added to that mix, there are four religions, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. So it’s a very complex society, with a strong heritage from all parts of the world. Buddhist temples sit next to a Mosque with a Church across the street, while a statue of Ganesh decorates the building down the road. Very complex and very rich.

Well, it’s been a cultural shock that’s for sure. July 1St we were invited to spend three days with a great family in Timur, six weeks later I am sitting on the couch of another great family, in Medan, Sumatra.
Very hard to tell you in a few words how this experience has been. The generosity, the smiles, the open minded people, the length at which people go to help, the food, the country itself, it’s just been magic. I don’t know if all Asian countries are as open and generous as this one but it’s a smack in my Western face, for sure.

Here’s a link to the HUBB with the good news.
So tomorrow we bring the cars to the shipping yard, have the custom inspection and hope to fly off on Wednesday or on Thursday at the latest. The container will hold both cars, then be sealed and loaded onto the ship (so this time, no stealing my laptop ya bastards!), the ship will depart Medan (port of Belawan) on the 19th and arrive in Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang). With custom clearance etc we can expect to drive off on the 20th or 21st.
