29 March 2012 – It’s a very short drive to town today, and I spend most morning in an Internet cafe to sort out my New Caledonian taxes, Medicare, banking, etc. Many thanks Fanny, once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have a chat with a guy from the local SES (State Emergency Services, the voluntary fire and rescue services) to find out if the track from here to the Peninsula is feasible, but he says it takes three days, I need three different authorizations and it’s best done with more than one vehicle as the drive is very treacherous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
So I decide against it and make my way to the Gorges in the National Park instead. Fantastic views on the river down, and on the cliffs. It’s bloody hot out here, and the hotter it gets, the more numerous the outback flies. Damn they’re annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three hours in this heat and I get out of the Park to find “Geraldine Mine” which the firie pointed me to. It’s an old lead mine with a couple of furnaces and he reckons the campsite is great, quiet and next to a river in which I can swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His very rudimentary map gets me lost a few times but I find the mine and the campsite. Indeed there is a billabong and man oh man it’s nice and refreshing. Sunset, a river, my book and a beer. What a perfect evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PS : I noticed when I drive for a long time on corrugated roads, the accelerator cable gets stuck… I must look at that.
PS2 : two caps of bleach in the tank made the trick, coffee tasted good this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
